A multi-city region where rules vary city by city, with San Francisco itself among the strictest on advertising vehicles. Large tech conferences, pro sports in three cities and dense commuter corridors set the audience. Here’s where a digital billboard truck earns its keep in the Bay Area, what it costs, and the local rules.
Routes work best when they repeat through a focused zone. These are the the Bay Area areas we’d look at first, and the format that tends to fit each.

Event campaigns & takeoversTypical pricing on Legion-built trucks across the network: shared monthly routes run $995, $1,895 or $3,495 per 4-week cycle depending on how often your ad rotates, and exclusive takeovers run about $800 for 2 hours, $1,400 for 4 and $2,500 for 8.
The same zone sees your ad every week of the cycle. Good for tech and SaaS companies.
$995 – $3,495 / monthOwn the truck around a game, concert or convention day; time it to Bay to Breakers (May) or a home game.
≈ $1,400 / 4 hoursGrand opening, product drop or sale weekend: your creative only, on the route and schedule you choose.

Book event campaigns early: trucks near the big dates go first. Event-day street closures and traffic control apply to trucks like any other vehicle.

State law: Vehicle Code 21100(m) lets cities regulate 'mobile billboard advertising displays' (signs on non-motorized trailers, devices or bikes, per VC 395.5). VC 21100(p) lets cities regulate advertising signs on motor vehicles parked or left standing on a public street, including move-after-a-set-time rules; signs painted on or permanently affixed within the vehicle's outline are exempt. Whether truck-mounted LED screens count as 'permanently affixed' is not spelled out, so parking a truck to display ads is the main legal risk; driving a route is not banned by state law. San Francisco: Police Code Sec. 680 is titled 'Advertising Vehicles Prohibited on City Streets' (full text not retrieved). The city also bars parking a commercial advertising vehicle on a public street: first Police Code 681 (2002), then Traffic Code 63.3 (2006), with a Transportation Code Div. I 7.2.81 'Advertising Sign' parking citation now on SFMTA's fine schedule. In 2012 a supervisor and SFPD used the city's advertising-vehicle ban to get a promotional truck off city streets. Oakland, San Jose and Santa Clara have separate codes, and their mobile billboard rules were not reviewed.
Your operator plans the route, parking and timing around these rules and any event-day restrictions.
