Mobile Billboard Advertising in Austin: Rules & Options

Austin is a fast-growing metro with a large festival and university calendar, but the City of Austin bans mobile billboards within its full-purpose city limits. Mobile campaigns here mostly target the fast-growing suburbs along I-35, US 183, SH 130 and SH 45. This page covers the rule and the campaigns that still work.

Austin Businesses That Get the Most From a Moving Billboard

  • Suburban home builders and apartment communities: fast growth in Williamson and Hays counties
  • Restaurants and retail in Round Rock, Cedar Park and San Marcos: busy suburban shopping corridors
  • Event and concert promoters: a heavy calendar of festivals and university events
  • Healthcare and urgent care in the suburbs: growing populations outside the city core
Local Rules

Mobile Billboard Rules in Austin

Short version: third-party advertising trucks are restricted in Austin.

The City of Austin prohibits mobile billboards within its full-purpose jurisdiction (City Code Sec. 25-10-103(7); ban adopted by Ordinance 20080605-076 in 2008). A mobile billboard is a sign on a motorized vehicle in the public right-of-way that advertises a business unrelated to the vehicle owner's primary business. Pedicabs, buses, compliant taxicabs, and a business's own vehicles advertising its own business are excluded. Surrounding cities such as Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville and San Marcos have their own codes, which were not reviewed.

Your operator plans the route, parking and timing around these rules and any event-day restrictions.

FAQ

Mobile Billboard Advertising in Austin: Questions

Are mobile billboard trucks allowed in Austin?
No, not inside the city's full-purpose limits. Austin City Code Sec. 25-10-103(7) has prohibited mobile billboards there since a 2008 ordinance, with exceptions such as a business's own vehicles advertising its own business. Campaigns usually focus on suburbs like Round Rock, Cedar Park and San Marcos, which set their own rules.
Can a truck run near SXSW or ACL Fest?
Both festivals take place inside Austin city limits, where third-party mobile billboards are prohibited. SXSW also closes parts of Congress Avenue, Red River and 6th Street downtown.
How much does mobile billboard advertising cost in Austin?
On Legion-built trucks, shared monthly routes typically run $995 to $3,495 per 4-week cycle depending on rotation frequency, and exclusive takeovers run about $800 for 2 hours, $1,400 for 4 hours and $2,500 for 8 hours. Event campaigns are quoted per event. The operator serving your area confirms exact pricing.
Who runs the truck for an Austin campaign?
Campaigns run through operators in the Legion network. Your request is matched by campaign ZIP code to an operator who serves the Austin area, and that operator confirms availability, the route and your creative.
How do I know my ad actually ran?
Legion trucks run ScreenFleet, which logs every ad play with a timestamp and the truck’s GPS location. Your delivery report is built from that proof-of-play data.
